SAPS pathway

The basic journey from training to firearm licence application.

South African firearm ownership is governed by the Firearms Control Act, 2000. Bosbok helps with the training side of the process; SAPS remains responsible for competency and firearm licence application decisions.

Step 01

Complete proficiency training

Complete firearm training through an accredited training provider, including the prescribed knowledge and practical components.

Step 02

Apply for SAPS competency

Use your training results to apply for a competency certificate at your nearest SAPS station through the Designated Firearms Officer.

Step 03

Apply for the firearm licence

Once competency is approved, continue with the relevant SAPS firearm licence application. This step will require a firearm motivation bundle.

Step 04

Keep ownership compliant

Responsible firearm ownership includes safe storage, correct documents and renewal awareness.

Inherited firearms

Inherited a firearm from a loved one?

If a loved one passed away and left firearms in an estate or will, the new owner may still need to complete the correct training, competency and firearm licence process before legally owning or using the firearm.

Bosbok can help you understand the training side of the process and what documents to prepare before applying through the proper channels.
